Understanding Sailing Ropes
Sailing rope isn't a one-size-fits-all purchase. The right line depends on what it does, what load it carries, and what your boat's hardware demands. This guide covers everything you need to know before you buy.
What Type of Sailing Rope Do You Need?
Different lines do different jobs. Here's how to match the rope to the application.
Halyards
Used to hoist sails and hold them under load. Look for low stretch and good UV resistance. Polyester-core with a polyester braid is the reliable choice for cruisers; Dyneema core halyards save significant weight aloft on racing boats.
Sheets
Your primary control lines, mainsheet, jib sheets, and spinnaker sheets. Sheets need to run freely through blocks and clutches, handle repeated loading and easing, and be comfortable to grab under pressure. A 16-strand polyester or Dyneema-blend braid in 10–12mm is the most common choice for keelboats.
Control Lines
Kicker, Cunningham, outhaul, reefing lines. Generally thinner diameter (6–8mm), low stretch preferred, and they need to work reliably in clutches and jammers. Polyester cover over a polyester or Dyneema core suits most applications.
Dock Lines & Mooring Warps
Not technically running rigging, but part of every sailor's rope kit. For dock lines you actually want some stretch — it absorbs shock loads from wash and wind. Three-strand or 8-strand nylon is the traditional choice; double-braid polyester for longer-term mooring applications.
Sailing Rope Materials Explained
The fibre and construction determine how a rope performs. Here's what the main options mean in practice.
Polyester
The workhorse of sailing ropes. Good strength, moderate stretch, excellent UV resistance, and easy to splice. Holds up well in salt water and doesn't degrade quickly in the sun. Suitable for most cruising applications from halyards to sheets to control lines.
Dyneema (UHMWPE)
Exceptionally high strength-to-weight ratio and minimal stretch. Commonly used as a core fibre in high-performance halyards and sheets. Pure Dyneema ropes require careful handling around cleats and winches as they can be slippery. Often used as a core with a polyester cover to get the best of both.
Polyester/Dyneema Blend
The most popular performance upgrade for cruiser-racers. Dyneema core for low stretch and light weight; polyester cover for grip, UV protection, and ease of handling. A good all-round upgrade over standard polyester for halyards and sheets.
Nylon
The go-to for anchor rodes and dock lines. High stretch absorbs shock loads, exactly what you want when your boat is bouncing against a dock or swinging on a mooring. Not appropriate for halyards or sheets where stretch is a problem.

Sizing by Boat Length
As a general guide: boats under 8m typically run 8–10mm sheets; 8–12m boats suit 10–12mm; larger keelboats commonly use 12–14mm for mainsheets and jib sheets. Always check your winch drum capacity and clutch/stopper specifications before ordering.
Matching Rope to Your Hardware
Your clutches, jammers, and blocks will have a specified rope diameter range, this is your hard limit. If your Spinlock clutch is rated for 8–12mm, there's no point running a 14mm sheet through it. Check your hardware spec first, then choose your rope.
How Much Rope Do You Need?
Getting the length right before you order saves a second trip.
Calculating Halyard Length
A general rule: mast height (above deck) × 2, plus 3–4m for running the line back to the cockpit and leaving enough tail on the winch. For in-mast or in-boom furling systems, add additional length for the furling drum.
Calculating Sheet Length
For jib sheets on a standard sloop: boat LOA × 2.5 is a reliable starting point — this gives you enough to reach the clew, run back to the cockpit winch, and leave a working tail. For spinnaker sheets, LOA × 3 is more appropriate.

Caring for Your Sailing Ropes
Rinse ropes with fresh water after sailing in salt water, especially before storage. Avoid leaving lines coiled in direct sun for extended periods; UV degradation is cumulative. If a rope shows glazing, core slippage through the cover, or visible core damage, retire it. A rope failure on a halyard or sheet at the wrong moment is not a recoverable situation.
